Designation & Funding Support
Welcome to Pentland’s Prosthetics & Orthotics Clinic. We facilitate access to essential care by helping you navigate funding opportunities through federal and provincial government agencies, insurance companies, and charities. Our team is committed to simplifying the process to ensure you receive the support you need for your treatment.
BC PharmaCare - Prosthetics
BC PharmaCare assists eligible residents of British Columbia with the costs of pre-approved prosthetic devices necessary for attaining or maintaining basic functionality.
As a provincially designated prosthetic and orthotic clinic, we at Pentland’s Prosthetics & Orthotics Clinic are committed to assisting eligible residents of British Columbia to navigate the PharmaCare program to cover costs.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Individuals must be enrolled in the BC Medical Services Plan (MSP).
- Consent must be given for PharmaCare to verify income with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for the past two years.
How It Works:
Our clinic facilitates the submission of an Application for Financial Assistance to PharmaCare on your behalf. This includes seeking pre-approval for your device, supplies, or service. PharmaCare then evaluates the application to determine the maximum coverage amount. Reimbursement is subject to the specifics of your plan, including any applicable annual deductibles. Clients are initially responsible for any costs not covered by PharmaCare.
Funding Details:
PharmaCare funding is individualized, with deductibles based on combined family income. These deductibles reset annually on January 1st. Once the deductible threshold is met, PharmaCare typically covers 70% of eligible costs until the client's out-of-pocket maximum is reached; thereafter, PharmaCare covers 100% of eligible expenses.
Additional Support:
Should there be any costs not covered by PharmaCare, our team is here to support you in exploring additional funding options through extended health (private insurance), other agencies or charities, helping to minimize your financial burden.
BC PharmaCare - Orthotics (18 years of age or younger)
PharmaCare supports children aged 18 and under by covering the costs of custom orthoses designed to enhance or maintain basic functionality or prevent further deformity.
As a provincially designated prosthetic and orthotic clinic, Pentland’s Prosthetics & Orthotics Clinic is dedicated to assisting eligible children in British Columbia to navigate the PharmaCare program to cover these costs effectively.
How It Works:
If your child requires an orthotic device, our Certified Orthotist will assess their needs and recommend the most suitable device. We will then submit an Application for Financial Assistance to PharmaCare on your behalf to seek pre-approval for the orthosis.
PharmaCare reviews each application to determine the maximum coverage amount. Reimbursement is based on your specific PharmaCare plan, including any deductible requirements. Generally, PharmaCare covers the full cost of orthotic treatments, including necessary adjustments and repairs, contingent upon completing the correct forms and obtaining prior approval. Once the final device is ready, Pentland’s will directly bill PharmaCare.
Additional Support:
If your family benefits from the Ministry of Housing and Social Development or the Ministry of Children and Family Development, these entities may assist with costs not covered by PharmaCare.
Furthermore, if there are any remaining costs not covered by PharmaCare, our team is prepared to help you explore other funding options through extended health (private insurance) or other agencies, aiming to minimize your financial responsibilities and ensure your child receives the essential support they need.
Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction - Orthotics (Adults)
The Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction provides funding for orthoses for eligible clients (over the age of 19) to meet a medically essential need. There must be no other resources available to the client to provide the item requested. To find out if you are eligible to receive funding from The Ministry, you may need to contact your local ministry representative.
How It Works
1. Download Form 2894 (Orthoses Request and Justification) and fill out your section (Section 1, page 1).
2. Call your doctor to make an appointment to get a referral.
3. Have the doctor fill out his/her position on the form (Section 2, page 1).
4. Have the doctor’s office fax the form to our clinic or drop it off at our office. Our Orthotist will then fill in his section (Section 3, page 2). We will assist you to proceed with the application once all the paperwork is filled out completely and correctly.
Once approval is received, we will set up an appointment for you to come into our office for a casting, fitting and follow-up.
Please know that approval from the Ministry can take anywhere from 30-90 days.
To find the office closest to you, please visit the Ministry website.
